What is the IPC Soldering Contest?

The IPC Soldering Contest is a competition organized by the International Standards Organization IPC to determine the best soldering in the world.

IPC Hand Soldering Champions

IPC supports soldering technicians around the world by organizing soldering competitions (Hand Soldering Competition) at various exhibitions and venues worldwide. In this competition, highly skilled hand soldering technicians representing companies compete to solder printed circuit boards within a specified time, demonstrating the quality and procedures of soldering and rework according to IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 standards, as well as the quality of rework and repair according to IPC-7711/21.
IPC organizes competitions for professionals and students who actively work in the soldering profession and awards cash prizes to the winners, runners-up, and third-place winners.

8 Countries, 10 Representatives Gathered

First of all, we would like to reiterate the importance of highlighting and promoting the soldering skills of technicians and engineers who work on soldering joint techniques in the daily work and factories of the electronics industry. The main purpose of this competition is to introduce hand soldering, an important skill for the electronics industry, and support outstanding technicians at the global level. We would also like to express our gratitude to Productronica, the exhibition organizer that welcomed us in Munich, Germany.

We celebrate the cooperation of the champions from various countries and their affiliated companies who have traveled a long distance to participate in this grand event.

Determining the best of the best in hand soldering…
This time, 10 champions were born from China, Vietnam, Japan, as well as the United Kingdom, Estonia, France, Germany, and Hungary. Among them, there are four female and six male champions.
They had to complete the assembly of a highly complex circuit board with 129 surface-mounted components, through-hole components, and over 200 solder joints, including tiny components such as 0402 and 0603, on a brand new printed circuit board. The evaluation criteria were based on the highest quality according to IPC Class 3 and the completion of this assembly in the shortest possible time.

Xianchao Wang, the champion from China, performed the work at the workstation and achieved a score of 550 points out of the maximum 558 points with a time of exactly 60 minutes, securing an impressive 3rd place!

Runner-up Announcement

Pauline Duval, Thales Etrelles France, Germany Representative

Pauline Duval, who won the championship in the German competition the previous day, achieved the runner-up position in the world championship as well. Like Xianchao Wang, Pauline also performed the work at the workstation and obtained a score of 551 points out of the maximum 558 points with a time of 58 minutes and 19 seconds, securing a remarkable runner-up position!

2022 Soldering World Champion

Eliane Chesnais, Thales Etrelles France, Germany Representative

And the 2022 Soldering World Champion is Eliane Chesnais from Thales France. For the first time in the history of IPC’s Soldering Competition, a world champion from outside of Asia has emerged! The competition demonstrated the high achievements and technical capabilities in Europe. Thales France was also awarded the IPC Hand Soldering Excellent Organization for achieving the highest level of soldering technology at the corporate level. Eliane, like Xianchao Wang and Pauline Duval, performed the work at the workstation and obtained a score of 556 points out of the maximum 558 points with a time of 59 minutes and 37 seconds, achieving a magnificent victory as the world champion!
